The boats leave from the town of Demre which is home to one Saint Nicholas who amongs his other philanthropic activities, once threw gold down a chimney to a poor family. There's a bunch more stories explaining why he is the inspiration for Santa. I seem to recall reading similar stories about a Saint in Denmark or Russia but we won't tell the throngs of tourists going to see the church in this saint's honor.
