South America 2005

Follow our 3 week journey through Argentina, Chile and Easter Island in February and March of 2005.

Buenos Aires

Our trip started in Buenos Aires.  We spent a couple days wandering the city, enjoying the graffiti and rowing a boat in their central park. Here's where we got our first taste of Argentinian beef. Mmmmmmm.

Calafate

A quick plane ride brought us to Calafate, deep in the heart of Patagonia. Calafate is a prime jumping location to the big parks: Los Glacieres to the North and Torres Del Paine to the South as well as the fabulous local Perito Moreno glacier. Our first stop in Calafate was just a quick one to find the chocolate shops in town and warm up for the coming days of hiking.

Chalten

A long and scary bus ride over dirt "highways" brought us to Chalten at the base of Los Glacieres National Park which hosts Mount Fitzroy and our first glacier walk on Torre Glacier. Chalten is really more of an overgrown campsite than a town, but it gave us a place to rest our feet and pick up more cookies.

Return to Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier

We survived the return bus ride to the touristy little village of Calafate. This place has the all feel of a Vail or South Lake Tahoe without the mountain. But it does have its very own glacier. We had a picnic on it.

Torres Del Paine

Torres Del Paine is Yosemite of Patagonia. It holds striking granite formations, flowing glaciers and beautiful lakes. It seemed to be the spot for trekking in Patagonia. Well, it was until the Czech camper set the place on fire the week before we got there...

Southern Patagonia - Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Tierra Del Fuego

We cut Torres Del Paine a bit short and bussed down to Punta Arenas to catch our next flight to Santiago. Somewhere in between we found a couple fishing towns, the land of fire and a few penguins. more...

Rapa Nui (Isla de Pascua, Easter Island)

Our final stop on the trip was Rapa Nui, home of the giant stone heads. We'll save the explanations and assume aliens dropped them in place so Elvis could phone hom. Just enjoy the pictures.
